Kelling Probus Club Meeting
KELLING PROBUS CLUB – JANUARY MEETING 2020
Kelling Probus Club held its January meeting at The Dales Hotel Upper Sheringham on Thursday 16th.
After drinks and buzzing conversation 21 members and two guests sat down to the usual tasty lunch.
Vice chair John Whittington welcomed our after lunch speaker Roger Woodard from Oulton Broad to speak to us on the 157 Infantry Regiment and its hero leader Felix Sparks.
A young married man with a young child he told the story of Felix’s travel in 500 days with the ‘Thunderbirds’ an American infantry regiment who landed in Sicily in July 1943 and ended up in 1945 at the end of the war in Dachau. The invasion of Sicily was not easy as the allotted date turned out to be stormy and many live were lost before the regiment could reach the beach. The main opposition were two German divisions of crack troops, although there was also an Italian army present it soon surrendered and Felix and his colleagues fought there way up to the Northern coast of the island and subsequently landed in Southern Italy losing many men on the way. Felix was wounded in this time and recovered in Algiers before he flew back to his regiment to fight on through the length of Italy and Southern France eventually fighting their way up towards Munich.
They were ordered to head for Dachau the big concentration camp where they released those remaining and were horrified by the carnage of the inmates. Roger told us Felix ended his army career as a Brigadier General and missed all his friends and colleagues who died in the conflict.
Our speaker was thanked by Gary Mitchell for a very good talk. We meet on the third Thursday of each month for lunch and a speaker. Want to come along ? ring John Whittington on 01263 820333.
